The first thour with a tailsaver can be frustrating... dogs in pain may jump around or bite. Some may growl or nip. They resist having their tail held and inserted into a sleeve, and unfortuneately they know and respond to their owners frustration and may think theyre in trouble when you are putting 100% effort into helping them. Step 1. Breath. Watch the video. Preset strap lengths to close to correct. Put on the harness. Take a break.
Step 2., hold tail and slide it into the sleeve. If your pup wont hold still a friend can help. Vet's will drop a sheet over the dogs head and have a tech hold it over the head. This seems to calm dogs. If things are tough enough at this point you can ask your vet to clear up 15 minutes for you. Once the tail is in (see our section for fluffy tails if thats your pups tail) you'll buckle straps tagged blue and red to harness. If you have a model with elastic you can quickly put it over the button on the harness (only a few sizes have this) and it will help hold sleeve while you adjust these 2 straps. check that under the tail the tail sits on a soft pad, and that the fit is gentle... and that the pad is pulled all the way up to the pups rump above anus. Next: the wag - tagged yellow- strap is really imortant because when tails lift higher than the dogs back it all falls off. It can be loose enough for wagging and going potty, but check that the pup cant lift tail above hips. Finally, the long diagonally place strap, from hip to bilt loop under the chest and back to other hip. Now tight... let it have some slack. All done for now. Over 12 days you'll watch for shifting off center... and respond with a small bit of tightening and checking under tail and re-locking the straps tagged blue and red (locking is back threading them.... or the WILL loosen and undo all your hard work getting the perfect lengths on those two straps. After the first hour though you can all take a deap breath, have a treat, hug your pup. it's so easy after this setup... a minute to remove, a quick wash and dry in machines (on cool) to clean. No need to take off otherwise, and your pup will be super happy after day 2. If he/she isnt happy check under the tail for comfort. Thats key to happy pups who don't chew. Our Best, Julie
